Ancient Apple Named

We are delighted to announce that Marjorie Hannah of Longtown is the winner of our competition to name one of our 'lost' apple trees. Marjorie's family farmed at Mallsgate either side of the War. She is a fund of stories and information about the place in those days and knew the trees as a girl. Her cousin, Evelyn, was able to confirm that the Stackyard tree is, indeed, a Keswick Codling, but the other three remained unnamed. Marjorie has named the cooker/eater that grows over the orchard wall 'Ben's Beauty', after her father, Ben Alston. It will now be grafted by Acorn Bank (NT) with examples placed in the collection there, at Brogdale, at Mallsgate and at Marjorie's own garden.
