Ancient Apple Named - Monday, January 16, 2012
We are delighted to announce that Marjorie Hannah of Longtown is the winner of our competition to name one of our 'lost' apple trees. Marjorie's family farmed at Mallsgate either side of the War. She is a fund of stories and information about the place in those days and knew the trees as a girl. Her cousin, Evelyn, was able to confirm that the Stackyard tree is, indeed, a Keswick Codling, but the other three remained unnamed. Marjorie has named the cooker/eater that grows over the orchard wall 'Ben's Beauty', after her father, Ben Alston. It will now be grafted by Acorn Bank (NT) with examples placed in the collection there, at Brogdale, at Mallsgate and at Marjorie's own garden.

Mallsgate Goes Organic - Thursday, November 24, 2011
My mother always said that anyone farming sheep needs to be certified (she was referring, though, to the Mental Health Act). On 12th November we were proud to be Certified as 'Organic' by Organic Farmers + Growers. Although this means that our lamb and beef can now be sold as 'Organic', in truth, it is simply official recognition of pretty much how we've always farmed at Mallsgate. Our taste and quality - and (very importantly) our prices - remain unchanged.  But you have the added comfort of a certified producer (helped by men in white coats).

Mallsgate Lamb and Beef boxes are very popular - Wednesday, September 28, 2011
What a great season we are having. Already the beef is sold out, but don't worry - we are now taking orders for Feb/March - so let us know if you would like us to reserve you a box.

Autumn Lambs have almost sold out, but for those of you who still haven't ordered - give the office a call as there are a couple left, but going by all the feedback, they will be snapped up soon - so be quick.
